Years ago, I was thinking the exact same thing.
As a Conversion Copywriter, I KNEW customer research was the key to making my work more effective (and getting higher paying clients).
But I didn't know where to start.
I had already spent thousands of dollars on courses that taught me how to write high-converting copy, which emphasized the importance of research, but they didn’t teach me HOW TO DO IT.
This left me feeling like an imposter because I didn’t have the research background I needed to make confident recommendations.
When I looked for resources on customer research, I felt totally overwhelmed.
I started Googling, but with every search result I felt more overwhelmed. Sometimes the content was good, but most of the time it wasn’t helpful, leaving me with more questions than answers.
At that time, the only customer research courses I could find were offered by universities, but the content was too abstract and not practical for small business owners.
Plus, the courses were expensive! I needed thousands of dollars just to sign up AND I needed to commit to a semester-worth of classes just to get the information I needed.
I also found courses offered by “gurus” with elaborate sales funnels that made me feel like I was just easy prey for hungry marketers.
And I didn’t want to be customer number 19,876 for some guy I didn’t know and who didn’t care about me or my goals; it just seemed like they wanted my money in exchange for whatever “mystery content” was hiding on the other side of the paywall.
On top of all that, everything about customer research seemed REALLY INTIMIDATING.
There were SO MANY types of research out there, I didn’t know what to focus on or what would be most useful for me and my clients.
People were talking about A/B testing. Others focused on Usability. Heatmaps were mentioned a lot. I saw terms like“heuristics” and "card sorting” … it was enough to make my head explode.
Even if I understood the methodologies, I still didn’t know how they worked, when to use them, or how they worked together, which left me feeling less like an expert and more like a fraud.
Over the years, I relied on trial-and-error to learn the various research methodologies and to develop what is now my proven process for conducting customer research.
Along the way, I paid for individual webinars, downloads, and courses so I could learn more about each of the methodologies; I also paid for tools and software so I could run my own tests (and feel more confident) before making suggestions to clients.
I even took lower-paying jobs with data-driven agencies so I could fill the gaps in my research knowledge (great for hands-on experience, but tough on my bank account).
Learning the ins & outs of customer research took YEARS because there was nothing out there that had everything in one place, taught by one trusted person, for a price I could afford.
I had to piece everything together myself which meant a lot of frustration, time wasted, and money lost, as I was constantly undercharging because I didn’t feel confident about my expertise.
But my story doesn’t have to be YOUR STORY.
You don’t have to waste years of your time (or thousands of your hard-earned dollars) trying to understand how customer research works and how you can use it to improve your business.
